Metal Guide
DreamStone offers an extensive collection of fine jewelry available in Platinum, 14k White and Yellow Gold, and 18k White and Yellow Gold.Platinum
Platinum is known for it's extremely white luster, strength, and durability. It is heavier metal than gold and more expensive. Like any precious metal, platinum may get scratched overtime from normal wear and tear, however it is unlikely to ever chip or break.
DreamStone offers fine jewelry made of 95 percent platinum and 5 percent other alloys such as iridium and palladium, which is the highest percentage of platinum available in fine jewelry. Look for the 950 Plat or Plat stamp on your jewelry.
Platinum Jewelry Care:
To clean your platinum jewelry soak it in a warm water and soap solution then lighty brush it with a soft bristle brush. To maintain the luster and shine of your platinum jewelry buff it with a jewel cloth or any soft cloth. If you prefer, you can have a jeweler professionally polish your platinum jewelry to bring back that brand new luster.
Gold
For centuries Gold has been admired for its malleably and beauty and is the most popular choice of metal for fine jewelry. Gold is resistant to air, water, and oxygen, which means it will never tarnish, rust, or corrode.
Karat (represented by k or kt) indicates the purity of the gold used. The higher the karat, the purer the gold. Below are all the different gold percentages:
Gold Percentages:
24 karat = 100% gold
Extremely soft and is not recommended for jewelry set with gemstones.
22 karat = 91.7% gold
Too soft for fine jewelry and therefore is not recommended for jewelry set with gemstones.
18 karat = 75.0% gold
Recommended for fine jewelry
14 karat = 58.3% gold
Recommended for fine jewelry
12 karat = 50.0% gold
Not acceptable for fine jewelry
10 karat = 41.7% gold
The lowest karat percentage legally considered real gold in the United States. Not recommended for fine jewelry.
Gold Jewelry Care:
To clean your gold jewelry soak it in warm water with ammonia or mild detergent then lighty brush it with a soft bristle brush.
To maintain the luster and shine of your gold jewelry buff it with a jewel cloth or any soft cloth.
If you prefer, you can have a jeweler professionally polish your jewelry to bring back that brand new luster.
Keep your gold jewelry away from chlorine, which can eventually weaken gold.
Rhodium
Rhodium is a very expensive and hard alloy that is primarily used as a protective coating to platinum and white gold. This protective coating acts as an agent which hardens, whitens, and increases the luster of these metals - an important ingredient to help prevent tarnishing.
